UGANDA – TRAVEL / HEALTH / GENERAL INFORMATION

- Weather: Uganda is right on the Equator, and at 1200m altitude and above (4000ft and more). Temperatures vary between 20C and 30C year round. In the North, nights are cool, at times cold, and days slightly hotter. Rain patterns vary within the country. In Karamoja the dry season goes from October to April.

- Visa: most Western countries and Commonwealth citizens can get their visa for $50 upon arrival. Very simple and fast procedure, the easiest airport I've been to (and I've travelled a lot…).

- Vaccines: only Yellow Fever is required. Valid 10 years.

- Health: Malaria prevention is advised. Other than that, as long as you eat cooked food and drink bottled or boiled water, you've addressed 95% of the health issues.

- Airlines: flights to Entebbe by British Airways, Brussels, Emirates, Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, KLM, Turkish Airlines, SAA.

- Currency: To be able to exchange currency anywhere, take US $ cash, $100 bills only, and from 2003 print date or newer only. Older notes are refused, and lower denominations are exchanged 20-30% below rate. Traveler’s Cheques are difficult to exchange, and Credit Cards are used only in a few high-end hotels. Euros in €50 or more, GB Pounds in £50 or more and SA Rands in R100 or more can be exchanged in Kampala but usually not upcountry.
