HUNTING IN UGANDA

Sport Hunting in Uganda was reopened in recent years as a pilot project, first on private land around Lake Mburo (Game Trails Uganda), then in Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve (Lake Albert Safaris).

The results have exceeded all expectations, and the explosion in animal populations in the areas concerned indisputably proved that Sport Hunting is the single most efficient way to control poaching locally, and to improve animal numbers.

Based on these results, Uganda Wildlife Authority opened other areas to Sport Hunting. The purpose is to encourage the private sector to cooperate with local communities for the management of wildlife, and to accelerate the recovery of animal populations by curtailing indiscriminate poaching, and efficiently manage wildlife.

In Uganda, the majority of the Government Animal Fees for animals hunted go directly to the local communities, representing a powerful incentive to consider wildlife as a sustainable resource.
